Developers presented plans to transform Cape Coral’s Four Freedoms Park into a vibrant community center, sparking excitement and concerns among residents. "Well, I think it's just great to be putting Cape Coral on the map. It's kind of like, it's been a hidden gem in Florida," said Patrick Hastings, walking along the park. Some residents, like Elena Saylor, worry the redevelopment could compromise the park’s charm. Saylor’s husband’s memorial bench is located in the park, and she hopes its tranquility will be preserved. "Freedom Park is a place of tranquility. It's a very special park, and the very first and oldest park . It is a true treasure. I would like it to stay the same," Saylor said. Developers met with city leaders to present renderings and ideas to expand Four Freedoms Park and introduce attractions along Victoria Drive. Mayor John Gunter expressed optimism about the project’s long-term benefits. The redevelopment, known as the Bimini East Project, will cost $500 million and aims to transform the area into hotels, apartments, and restaurants. Crown Development President Larry Nygard said the project will revitalize an area severely damaged by Hurricane Ian. Nygard added that discussions with city council have led to reconsideration of what will happen with Four Freedoms Park. "What came out of our discussion with the council today was that maybe we should rethink the idea of relocating all of the playground equipment and consider keeping some of it on the Four Freedoms Park. So, we're going to look at that possibility." Nygard said. If approved, the Bimini East Project is expected to be completed by 2035.
