Construction crews in Fort Myers are transforming Legacy Island with new gazebos, a pier, and walking paths as part of a reconstruction project that is currently ahead of schedule. Crews offered a look at their progress, using cranes, a diving team, and carpenters to bring the project to life. "This is the main pier that we have going on right now. And then in the back we have the gazebo poles for the main pier as well. This is going to be the first stage of the process for the main pier," said Jeremy Weischedel, general manager of Williamson Brothers. The project will include a main pier with five boat slips, two gazebos, a walking path, and an additional walking pier while preserving the island's natural beauty. "The project has been going very smoothly. We're thankful for that. The weather hasn't really had any kind of discrepancies with our time frame. We're actually ahead," Weischedel said. Starting construction was a lengthy process, as obtaining permits took several years. Craig Freeman, a Fort Myers resident, shared his thoughts on the development. "It's a good idea. I mean, we're developing, people are out on their boats here, and I think it'll be a great use of the property," he said. While the project is ahead of schedule, Fort Myers officials said the park is expected to open in December, providing a new destination for boaters and kayakers. "I think it's going to be a good thing for people that are boating and stuff that just want to stop and relax. Maybe we'll get another ferry. And like we used to have down by the Oxbow, that would go out, and they would do tours and such," Freeman said. Crews expect to finish construction ahead of schedule, with completion anticipated before September.
