Diarrhea-causing parasite cases climb to 264 in Florida; Lee County reports 25

LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — Cases of a diarrhea-causing parasite continue to rise across Florida, with the state now reporting 264 confirmed and probable cases of cyclosporiasis this year.

The latest data from the Florida Department of Health shows Lee County has reported 25 cases, making it the county with the third-highest number of reported infections in the state.

Miami-Dade County has reported the most cases with 43, followed by Broward and Orange counties with 22 each.

Other Southwest Florida counties reporting cases include Collier County, which has reported six infections.

The Florida Department of Health data includes confirmed and probable cases reported among Florida residents. Health officials note that case numbers are preliminary and can change as reports are investigated and updated.

The increase comes as federal health officials continue investigating Cyclospora outbreaks across the country. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 6,700 laboratory-confirmed cases nationwide as of late July.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can contaminate food or water. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can cause intestinal illness with symptoms including frequent diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and other digestive problems.

Health officials recommend washing hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and before handling food. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not kill Cyclospora.
