DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — A detainee at the DeSoto County Jail died after being transported to a hospital for treatment of an illness, according to a statement from the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office.
On July 31, Tasha Idella Brown, 53, was taken to DeSoto Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for an illness and passed away at the hospital that same day, the statement said.
"I want to extend my condolences to Tasha Brown's family and friends," Sheriff James F. Potter said.
"An incident like this is taken extremely seriously, and detectives will conduct a thorough investigation, which aligns with our protocols following an in-custody death," Potter said.
Brown was arrested on June 16 on various drug charges, according to the statement.
The sheriff's office is working with the Medical Examiner's Office, and this remains an active investigation.
