Cape Coral football coach suspended amid School District investigation into "team-building incident"

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—A Mariner High School head football coach has been suspended while the Lee County School District investigates what officials described as a "team-building incident".

District spokesperson Rob Spicker confirmed that a statement posted by Lee County School Board Chair Armor Persons is accurate. Spicker said the head coach has been suspended in relation to a team-building incident.

In a social media post, Persons said he had been briefed that the district "immediately initiated an investigation and placed the coach on administrative leave while that investigation is underway." Persons said placing the coach on administrative leave was "the appropriate first step to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure due process."

Persons emphasized that the School Board does not conduct personnel investigations or direct operational decisions, saying those responsibilities rest with the superintendent and district administration. According to Persons, the board's role is to provide oversight and ensure district policies are followed and that appropriate action is taken based on the facts.

Persons said he would not speculate on the outcome before the investigation is complete but said that if district policies were violated or students were placed at risk, he expects "appropriate accountability and corrective action."

In a follow-up comment, Persons said there will be "a thorough investigation and appropriate action will be taken." He added that because employee terminations must be voted on by the board, he could not comment further.

The district has not released additional details about the team-building incident, and the investigation remains underway.
