FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — A house fire on Meadow Avenue this morning presented unique challenges for firefighters due to extreme hoarding conditions inside the home.
Fort Myers Fire Captain John Krizka said crews could see the smoke from about two blocks away. Light fire was coming from the roof when they arrived.
"We could notice the smoke from about two blocks away. There was light fire coming from the roof," Captain Krizka said.

About 15 firefighters responded to the scene, working to extinguish the flames. However, accessing the fire proved difficult due to the condition of the home.
"When we came to try to make entry, there were some doors that were locked. We forced doors. A lot of debris was getting in our way from advancing through the house," Captain Krizka said.
The extreme hoarding conditions created blocked pathways, making it difficult for crews to move through the house. The man renting the home was not inside when the fire started, but firefighters did find two other residents.
"We found two kittens that we rescued, and then worked on an aggressive fire attack," Captain Krizka said.
The damage was significant. The fire spread through the roof and attic air space, while the rest of the house sustained extreme smoke damage.
"It spread through the roof, through the attic air space. The rest of the damage, most of the house is just extreme smoke damage for all," Captain Krizka said.
The home is a total loss. Captain Krizka emphasized the importance of keeping homes organized and maintaining clear exits.
"Definitely be organized. Keep things off the floorways. Always have a clear exit and entrance through to every room in the house. It would definitely help. I know everyone likes their things, but make sure it's easy to evacuate," Captain Krizka said.
The Red Cross was called to assist the man who was renting the home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
