CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — More than a million square feet of land, about the same size as 18 football fields, sits primed to prosper off Southwest Pine Island Road in Cape Coral, but the big question remains: if or when is Walmart coming?
Many people living in the area are anxiously awaiting the new Walmart. Records show Walmart bought the land more than a decade ago.
WINK News first reported in 2015 that it would open in 2016. "And the biggest plan currently in the works... a new Walmart Supercenter... less than 3 miles from the new Sam's Club," a WINK News reporter said at the time. "It is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016 on Pine Island Road across from the German American Social Club."
But the land still looks exactly the same. For some, a field of convenience awaits.
"That would make it easier, better for me and the residents that are nearby," one resident said.
WINK News has received emails over the years asking for any updates on the plans. The question has also come up at WINK Listens events.
"They were going to build a Walmart right across from Bubba's Roadhouse," said Brian Hook. "Don't see anything being done."
Progress is slow but moving. Last year at this time, the permitting progress sat at 4% approval.
