Cape Coral boy recovering after being hit by car while riding scooter

A 4-year-old boy riding his scooter down his driveway and into the road on Northwest 7th Street in Cape Coral was hit by a car Tuesday night, leaving neighbors shaken and his family concerned. "Within minutes, there were police and EMTs and everything. And we sat here wondering what happened," Alicia Lien said. Lien, who lives in the area and is a parent, said many children play or ride around the neighborhood streets. "We don't let them out alone, which is, it's a sad reality these days. But people are speeding up and down the road constantly. So we either put our chairs at the bottom of our driveways or sometimes right in the road so that people actually have to slow down because I'd rather them hit me than one of the kids," Lien said. Cape Coral police confirmed the driver stayed at the scene and said the incident was an accident. The boy was taken to the hospital and is now recovering at home. His parents, speaking off-camera, said their son suffered a broken collarbone. Another neighbor, Bryan Hamilton, described the emotional impact of hearing the screams from the boy’s mother. "Yeah, because it sounded fatal. I mean, that scream, that mother scream, it's like, you know, that pitch and it makes you jump. And so I was, when I was like, started tearing up because I was like, oh, no, man," Hamilton said. Neighbors said they hope the incident serves as a reminder for drivers to slow down and for parents to supervise young children playing in the area.
