A black Mercedes was caught on surveillance video crashing through a mailbox and trash cans on Banning Street in Lehigh Acres around 7:30 a.m. Thursday. "I was waking up my son to take the garbage out because today's our garbage day. And then as he's slipping out the door, we hear this really big bang. So we looked outside, and we saw that a car had hit and run," said Janice Mones, a Lehigh Acres resident. The car sped over Mones' mailbox, continuing through her neighbor's trash cans and concrete mail post without slowing down. The surveillance footage was posted on Facebook shortly after the incident, where comments from community members sharing similar experiences poured in. "I have seen it been posted before, so I thought it would be, you know, a little bit of another awareness for me to post it as well and just see to hear from my own community and just seeing how much feedback I got that it's not, it's a frequent thing," Mones said. Neighbors expressed concerns about the safety of their block and are seeking answers. "I want him to say sorry. That's all I want; he's, like, sorry he did it. Because you have to be responsible. You have to be responsible. You know?" said Miguel Bastardo, another Lehigh Acres resident. The Lee County Sheriff's Office confirmed they are investigating the hit-and-run incident on the street.
