Fort Myers preschool evacuated after person flees traffic stop on Ramsey Way

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Fort Myers police are investigating after a person ran from officers during an attempted traffic stop and may have entered a preschool.

The incident happened at the 5200 block of Ramsey Way in Fort Myers, near Wellington Academy by Sam's Club off U.S. 41. Officers surrounded the area and searched the property.

Police say the situation began when a person ran from officers during an attempted traffic stop. Investigators believed the person may have entered the childcare facility, prompting staff to evacuate the building while officers searched inside.

Everyone inside the childcare facility is safe. Police say no one was found in the facility.

The experience left parents shaken.

"He's like, yeah, we had to go to the bathroom, but you know, a little too young to understand what's going on," Courtney Devlin, a parent, said. "But scary to even hear your kids say something like that. You don't expect something like that to happen," she added.

The investigation remains active as police continue working to identify and locate the person who ran from officers.
