Charlotte County activates school zone speed cameras for new school year

Charlotte County has activated school zone speed cameras to catch drivers exceeding speed limits as students head back to class for the new school year. The cameras are designed to catch drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by 10 mph or more in designated school zones during specific enforcement times. "It's a good idea because I believe that it'll help to take care of the kids. And there's a lot of a lot of busy traffic down there in the school zone," said Kent Kraus, a Port Charlotte resident. The enforcement times include 30 minutes before schools' breakfast programs begin until 30 minutes after classes start, and again 30 minutes before dismissal through 30 minutes after the end of the school day. Drivers caught speeding may receive a $100 violation notice sent to the vehicle’s registered owner. "Well I think I think that's a good starting point," Kraus said. Drivers are reminded to pay close attention to flashing lights and posted signs, as enforcement times may vary by school. The county stated that the goal of the cameras is not just to issue tickets but to encourage drivers to think twice before speeding in areas where children are present. As the school year begins, officials urge drivers to slow down, watch for signs, and allow extra time for their commutes to help keep children safe.
