Glades County Schools sees financial turnaround after being deemed broke

GLADES COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — Glades County Schools are starting a new school year tight on money.

In April, WINK News reported the district was one of two in the state that were deemed broke. Last school year, the district cut $1.4 million from its budget.

WINK News reached out to the superintendent to see where things stand this school year. In an email, Dr. Beth Barfield said the district has made progress on its financial situation.

"Our financial outlook has improved significantly, and we are optimistic that we will complete our recovery and conclude the Board's oversight early this year," Barfield said.

The state's Education Department Financial Emergency Board is meeting on the 20th. 

The school district recently secured $5.8 million to replace the roof and HVAC system at West Glades School.

The funds were secured through the district's legislative delegation and approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Dr. Barfield said the will provide students and staff with a safer, more comfortable and modern learning environment.
