Lee County drivers warned to watch for school buses as classes start

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — The Lee County School District is preparing to transport more than 100,000 students as the new school year begins on Tuesday.

All district buses will be dispatched from a central command location in Cape Coral.

Bus camera footage from the Lee County School District shows drivers running through stop signs while buses are stopped. Florida state law requires drivers to stop when a bus is flashing red lights.

Last school year, WINK News reported on a child being hit by a driver while boarding a bus. The driver wasn't paying attention, and the student sustained minimal injuries.

As the new school year begins, authorities are advising drivers to be aware of buses on the road to keep students safe.
