Senior safety Kamarien McKay ready to make impact for Fort Myers High

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Fort Myers High School is adding an impact player to its defense this fall.

A broken collarbone ended strong safety Kamarien McKay's season at Cypress Lake last year, but the senior has a fresh start with the Green Wave. WINK News sports reporter Lauren Halpern has more on this week's Comeback Athlete of the Week.

A new jersey, but the same fearless mentality. McKay says this season is about picking up where an injury left off.

"I hit them, and it popped. I thought it was out of place, but I was like, 'Let me go sit down.' And then Turner was like, 'No, no, you got to go to the hospital.' I was like, 'Dang!' I sat out for like 12 weeks," McKay said.

The broken collarbone ended his season at Cypress Lake before the playoffs. The injury devastated the then-junior.

"When I found it was broken, I was really crying because my season was gone, like my last junior year. That's all. I was just hurt," McKay said.

Even though he found himself watching his team's postseason run from the sidelines, McKay says he never stopped leading. He remained committed to helping his teammates succeed.

"It was hard watching the team, but I had to be there to coach them all because without me there, they were like falling apart. So I still had to coach them on, tell them what I knew best, and coach the young kids up," McKay said.

Now, after transferring to Fort Myers for his senior year, he's healthy, hungry and ready to make an immediate impact. The strong safety has a message for opponents this fall.

"Just watch out. Number seven in Fort Myers. Just watch out," McKay said.

McKay says he's looking to rack up 130 tackles this season and tally 10 pick-sixes.
