Speed cameras active in Cape Coral school zones starting tomorrow

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—School zone speed cameras are active in Cape Coral as students return to class.

The Cape Coral Police Department says the cameras are designed to improve safety for students, parents, crossing guards and school staff by encouraging drivers to slow down in school zones. Safety is top of mind for parents and the police department as more students will be walking, biking and driving to school.

Under Florida law, drivers traveling more than 10 mph over the posted school zone speed limit while the cameras are active are subject to a $100 notice of violation issued to the vehicle's registered owner.

Donald Thomas has a daughter who attends school in Cape Coral and says he's seen firsthand how busy these roads can get around school.

"I know they have one close to the school. I would like to have a little bit more some places else, to where there are actually blind spots for the kids and you know walking distances. A lot of kids I do see walking, so that as a parent does draw concerns at times. But I do like the fact they do have them," Thomas said.

School zone speed cameras are active only on school days. Posted signs at each school identify the times when the school zone is active.
