Former Marco Island City Council member Joseph Rola dies at 83

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. (WINK) — Former Marco Island City Council member Joseph Lawrence Rola has died at 83, the city announced. Rola died Aug. 10, according to his obituary.

Rola served on the Marco Island City Council from 2020 to 2024. Before his election to the council, he spent five years on the city's Planning Board, according to the city.

Rola and his wife, Barbara, lived on Marco Island for 26 years. According to his obituary, he enjoyed spending time on the water and sailing his boat, the Awashonks.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter Christine; stepdaughter Victoria; stepson Darren; sister-in-law Sybil; and others who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Gloria Rola, and his brother, Ron.

The City of Marco Island extended condolences to Rola's family and friends.

A visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Hodges-Josberger Funeral Home, 577 E. Elkcam Circle in Marco Island. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., with burial at Marco Island Cemetery.

The Marco Island City Council will remember Rola and his contributions to the city during its 5:30 p.m. meeting Aug. 17.

The meeting will be held in the Community Room at 51 Bald Eagle Drive.
