IMAGineThat!: Percy the African spurred tortoise celebrates birthday at IMAG in Fort Myers

Our friends at the IMAG History and Science Center joined Gulf Coast News Wednesday to throw a birthday party for Percy, the African spurred tortoise at the IMAG. Weighing over 100 pounds, Percy is a part of the largest mainland species of tortoise, originating from the Saharan Desert and Sahel region of Africa. Scientifically speaking, Percy is a Centrochelys sulcata. Sulcata tortoises are named for the grooves on their shells and are known for digging holes in the ground to stay cool. Percy is described as "cool and groovy," and, as an herbivore, he loves grass, leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables.
