Two Cape Coral BMX racers bring home big stories from World Championships

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — Two Cape Coral BMX racers returned home after representing Team USA at the World Championships in Australia.

Eleven-year-old Remy Sessa came home with her third world title in four appearances. Fifteen-year-old Crosby Backer had a different experience but learned valuable lessons along the way.

Sessa crossed the finish line in Australia to claim her latest championship.

"Honestly, when I crossed the finish line, I was super excited," Sessa said.

Beyond BMX, Sessa said her family explored Australia, even getting up close to kangaroos. She comes home with another championship and bigger goals.

"I'd like to get like Nat One out of all the amateurs, and I also want to get like Nat One for class on Cruiser," Sessa said.

Sessa walked away from Australia with a plaque commemorating her achievement. She isn't the only Cape Coral rider who left with a story to tell.

Backer is no stranger to competing at the highest level.

"I've gotten World Three before when it was in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and that was my best finish at Worlds that I've had," Backer said.

This time around, he was running inside the top 10 before a crash changed everything.

"I was running good the first two motos, running top top 10, top eight, and in second place in the third round. And I slid out, you know, punched the ground when I slid out, popped a few fingers out, banged up the hip a little bit, and I still made it to the eighth finals, and just wasn't enough," Backer said.

Backer finished 44th at the World Championships. It wasn't the result he wanted, but he said it taught him something more important.

"Keep your head up, and you know, don't let small mistakes set you back further than they need to, and yeah, just keep moving forward," Backer said.
