Fort Myers man accused of using stolen identities to buy cars at Tampa dealership

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)— Fort Myers police arrested a 41-year-old man accused of using stolen personal information to try to buy vehicles. Johnathan Andrew Decker faces two counts of fraud-impersonation.

Police said two victims discovered their personally identifiable information had been used without their consent in attempts to obtain vehicle financing. The victims received notices that financing applications had been submitted using their information, despite never applying for the financing or agreeing to serve as co-signers.

The attempted purchase was made through a Tampa-area dealership, where employees noticed discrepancies with the identification provided during the transaction. Detectives say the employees' attention to detail prevented the vehicle from being delivered.

Detective DiPascale identified Decker as a suspect. As detectives continued developing the case, additional victims were identified. On Aug. 7, detectives executed a search warrant at an apartment on Waterbury Court with assistance from the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Decker was transported to the Lee County Jail. Detectives continue working with the State Attorney's Office as the case moves forward, and additional charges are pending.
