FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Downtown Fort Myers could soon have twice as many scooters and extended riding hours.
The city is considering expanding its scooter program, but neighbors are already raising concerns. A vote is expected on Monday to determine the future of scooter access in the area.
One resident expressed worry about the proposed changes, particularly the extended hours.
"Dark streets, alcohol involved, adding another hour on…You're asking for trouble," they said.
The expansion would double the number of orange scooters available downtown. The proposal also includes new riding hours that have sparked debate among community members.
The controversy centers on safety concerns and on how the increased presence of scooters might affect the downtown area. Residents are weighing the convenience of expanded access against potential risks.
The decision on whether to move forward with the scooter expansion rests with city officials.
