A Cape Coral couple is searching for answers as cracks in their driveway and property continue to worsen, with the city investigating the issue. "If you look at my driveway, it's all cracked and beat up," said Jack Johnson, a resident of northwest Cape Coral. For months, Johnson and his wife, Denise, have watched as cracks creep closer to their home on Northwest 16th Terrace. "Well, you can see right here, it's almost up to the garage, that crack that was never there before up until recently," Denise Johnson said. The couple believes nearby construction may be contributing to the problem. Denise said she has been documenting the cracks since last year and has contacted the city about the issue. In June, Gulf Coast News observed crews working outside the Johnsons' home. The city confirmed that crews were drilling on the road as part of a geotechnical investigation to help determine why the road is dipping. Currently, the city has not identified the cause. "The engineers have had it in their hands for over a month now, and I still don't know what they're doing," Jack Johnson said. The city stated that staff met with the Johnsons last week and will continue to evaluate the situation to determine any additional steps. Adjacent private properties are also being assessed. Work on the road is expected to begin this month.
