PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (WINK) — A barricaded suspect is in custody after a standoff that lasted from Monday night into early Tuesday morning on Pasadena Drive.
Neighbors reported hearing commotion and smelling smoke around 8 p.m. Monday. The suspect is accused of threatening to kill his family and law enforcement during a domestic dispute, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived, the suspect barricaded himself inside the home for hours. He also set his vehicle on fire during the standoff.
At one point, the suspect fired shots at armored trucks and deputies, who returned fire. One round struck him in the hand, and he eventually surrendered.
"Once he is released from the hospital, he is going to be facing a plethora of charges," Sheriff Bill Prummell said. "What we found out about Renal is that he is a convicted felon. It also believes that he is in the country illegally from Haiti, so we are working with our partners with Border Patrol and ICE to get that situated."
The investigation remains active, and deputies have not been able to fully enter the home due to fire damage and gas deployed by SWAT. WINK News will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
