FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Lee County Parks & Recreation will host free volunteer workdays at preserves throughout the county in celebration of National Public Lands Day on Sept. 26.
The family-friendly events begin at 9 a.m. and offer opportunities to give back to local public lands while enjoying the outdoors. Space is limited at each site and advance registration is required by Sept. 24.
Volunteers are required to wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. They are encouraged to bring work gloves, sun protection and drinking water.
Volunteer projects will take place at Lakes Park, Moody River Preserve, Oak Hammock Preserve and Wild Turkey Strand Preserve. At Lakes Park, located at 7330 Gladiolus Drive in Fort Myers, volunteers will remove non-native invasive vegetation and are encouraged to bring loppers or hand saws. The event is limited to 15 participants.
At Moody River Preserve, located at 866 Moody Road in North Fort Myers, volunteers will work on removing fences and non-native invasive vegetation. Volunteers are encouraged to bring leather work gloves, hammers and loppers or handsaws, with the event limited to 20 participants.
Oak Hammock Preserve, located at 2200 Carter Lane in Alva, will also focus on removal of non-native invasive vegetation. Volunteers are encouraged to bring loppers or hand saws, and the event is limited to 20 participants.
At Wild Turkey Strand Preserve, located at 11901 Rod & Gun Club Road in Fort Myers, volunteers will work on beautification efforts in the public use area. Volunteers should wear clothing suitable for painting, and the event is limited to 20 participants.
No motorized equipment is allowed at any of the sites. National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest single-day volunteer event for public lands, promoting environmental stewardship and encouraging communities to connect with nature.
