CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—A Cape Coral Uber driver had his routine ride interrupted when police surrounded his vehicle to arrest his passenger.
Daniel Markham picked up a passenger outside a Cape Coral home and turned onto Embers Parkway. He noticed a Cape Coral police car turn off the median and follow them, but the patrol vehicle didn't turn on its lights right away.
Two streets down, police turned on their lights and pulled the Uber over. Markham said what happened next unfolded quickly.
"I got close to this intersection here at 17th, and he lit it up. So I pulled in and pulled over right here, and the next thing I know, there's four cars on top of me," Markham said. "They came out like a shot."
Cape Coral police pulled the passenger, Michael Hennessey, out of the car and handcuffed him. An officer went up to the front window and told Markham to keep his hands on the wheel and took his ID.
A Cape Coral police report says the Special Investigation Unit had probable cause to arrest Hennessey for narcotic sale charges. The report says an undercover detective saw Hennessey leave his home then get in a car, communicating that with another detective who assisted in the traffic stop.
"He was on the passenger side rear," Markham said. "They had his door open and getting him. One pulled up to the front on the passenger side, told me just to put my hands on a wheel."
Cape Coral police said they pulled Hennessey out of Markham's car for resisting an officer. Hennessey was searched and the incident report said he had a small baggie with a small white, rock-like substance that later tested positive for .3 grams of cocaine.
"One of the officers would say, 'This is nothing new to you. You know what cuffs are. You know when pulling them out,'" Markham said. "So apparently they had met this gentleman before."
When Markham was cleared, an officer told him they had a warrant for the passenger's arrest and to search his home for drug-related reasons. Markham was released after Cape Coral police checked his ID.
"It was a great experience as a citizen to see this happen the way it happened, to know that I was safe, but at the same time, they took care of business and they did it in such a professional way," Markham said.
Hennessey is currently booked in Lee County Jail on over a dozen charges related to drug trafficking, possession and tampering or fabricating physical evidence.
