SANIBEL, Fla. (WINK) — Drivers heading to Sanibel Island are in for some changes on the road this week. Starting Monday, Lee County DOT crews will begin bridge deck repairs on Span B of the Sanibel Causeway.
From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., westbound traffic will shift around the work area.
The repairs are expected to run through Thursday, weather permitting. But the causeway is not the only stretch of road getting attention on the island.
Periwinkle Way, a busy stretch once drivers make it onto the island, has been drawing concern over congestion, and the city is still discussing whether to add a roundabout in the area.
WINK News traffic anchor Mariaregina Mendoza spoke with beachgoers about the idea. "I will tell you, after being down here for five years, that is a heavy, concentrated area.
Usually, they have a human being there directing traffic, and a roundabout would just speed everything up," said Jeff Gaurdy, a local.
Scott Brinkman, another local, shared a similar take. "I'm from the Midwest, and we don't have a lot of them, so I'm kind of figuring out how they work. But I do see in certain circumstances where they work, I think in this specific case, it would probably ease the congestion," Brinkman said.
WINK News reached out to the city of Sanibel for more details on the bridge repairs and is still waiting to hear back.
