Collier County debates removing gas station distance rule

Collier County commissioners are discussing whether to remove a rule that mandates gas stations be at least 500 feet apart, with plans to gather public input before any final decision. Currently, gas stations in Collier County must adhere to the 500-foot distance rule, though developers can request waivers to build closer. County staff is recommending that commissioners eliminate the requirement altogether. The item before commissioners Tuesday is the first step in the process. They are being asked to direct staff to schedule a public hearing to gather input from residents. No final change to the rule is being made at this meeting. At present, only nine of Florida's 478 local governments require gas stations to maintain a specific distance from one another, and just seven offer waivers to bypass the rule. In October, a waiver for a proposed Costco gas station in Collier County sparked significant opposition. While more gas stations could provide drivers with additional fueling options, concerns remain about the increased traffic they might bring when located close together.
