Fall in Florida: When we could cool down on the Gulf Coast

As the kids have headed back to school and pumpkin-flavored treats have returned, many of us on the Gulf Coast are itching for fall. Highs will soar to the mid to low 90's every day this week. Above-average temperatures are set to linger through at least the beginning of September. While the temperatures have not gotten the memo, there may be a treat for autumn lovers. Meteorological fall begins on September 1. For the "official" start to the season, we need to wait until September 22. That is the astronomical start to the season. Meteorological fall runs from Sept. 1 through Nov. 30. It commences earlier than astronomical fall to help with record keeping. The astronomical start of fall can slightly waver, making for inconsistent number of days in each season; meteorological fall always begins and ends on the same date. On the Gulf Coast, we won't see a large shift when summer ends. Average high temperatures still reach the 90s in September. A bigger change will happen in October, when rainy season comes to a close. Typically, a cold front will sweep across the Gulf Coast in mid-October signaling the end of perpetual afternoon showers. Starting in October, our seasonal averages drop to the 80's. On average, we see out last 90-degree day of the year in Fort Myers on October 13.
