Gov. DeSantis announces TANF restrictions on tobacco, vaping, video games and more

TAMPA, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Monday that Florida is moving to restrict what recipients can purchase with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits, including tobacco, vaping products, video games and theme park tickets.

DeSantis said Florida is the first state in the nation to amend its TANF State Plan to prohibit the use of benefits for certain items and services.

DeSantis made the announcement in Tampa.

TANF provides assistance to low-income families. In Florida, Temporary Cash Assistance benefits are provided through an electronic benefits transfer card, commonly known as an EBT card.

DeSantis said the program already prohibits the use of benefits for alcohol, gambling and adult entertainment establishments.

He said he directed the Florida Department of Children and Families to amend the state's TANF plan to add restrictions on the purchase of:

• Tobacco
• Vaping products
• Adult content
• Video games
• Theme park tickets
• Tattoos
• Spa services
• Tanning
• Psychic readings

“Taxpayer-funded assistance should help families put food on the table, keep the lights on, purchase clothing, provide for their children and overcome barriers on the path toward independence,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis said the changes are intended to ensure taxpayer-funded assistance is used for essential needs and help families move toward self-sufficiency.
