North Fort Myers senior Wyatt Mecsics plays through 4 injuries

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — A North Fort Myers High School lineman is back on the field for his senior season after suffering injuries to both wrists, his ankle and his knee over the last year.

Wyatt Mecsics broke one wrist during a game and the other in the weight room. He also tore something in his ankle and had an enlargement in his knee and one of his tendons.

Despite the setbacks, Mecsics said he missed just one game. He credits his determination to get back on the field.

"Really bartering with trainers to let me play and just be tough," Mecsics said.

One week into the regular season, Mecsics is healthy and helping out on both sides of the ball. He has his sights set on restoring North Fort Myers to its former reputation.

"My goal is to take North Fort Myers out of the slump it's found itself going into and help my team restore it back to North Fort Myers and how respected they used to be," Mecsics said.

He said that starts with more than just his own success. The team needs to come together and play for each other rather than for individual glory.

"Working hard and coming more together," Mecsics said. "In the past, we've had real attitude problems, and everyone wanted to play for themselves and not the team. So I think if we really just come together, we can do what we need to do."

Mecsics has his eye on the record books, chasing the school sack record of five in a game or 12 in a season.
