Smoke still possible as Bonita Springs brush fires near containment

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. (WINK) — Two brush fires that burned north of Bonita Beach Road are mostly under control as of Tuesday morning.

The 70-acre Radio Tower Road brush fire is 80% contained, while the 6.1-acre Vincent Road brush fire is 98% contained. The fires are located just north of Bonita Beach Road, east of I-75.

Both fires are now mostly contained, but there's still plenty of dry brush in the area. Radio Tower Road is all dirt, surrounded by woods, and Vincent Road is only reachable by dozers.

The larger fire started near Radio Tower Road around 2:30 p.m. and quickly spread through the grass and brush. A second fire started near Vincent Road, about a half-mile away.

Firefighters and Florida Forest Service crews brought in brush trucks and dozers to get around the fire. Some of the terrain made that work especially challenging.

Jesse Lavender with the Florida Forest Service said along with battling flames, crews were also working to keep the roads around the fire safe and open.

"The sheriff's office is doing a great job at this time. This is kind of a funky little interchange with the roundabout and being the time of day it is," Lavender said. "But we're going to do our best to keep these roads open and safe, and that's why we have all this, you know, mutual aid out here."

Crews will be keeping an eye on things throughout the morning. With smoke still possible in the area, residents may notice that campfire smell lingering.
