Cape Coral approves stormwater fee increase to address flooding and water quality

The Cape Coral City Council approved a $7 increase in stormwater fees for the 2027 fiscal year budget on Wednesday to address flooding, drainage and water quality issues. The budget includes funding for improvements to drainage, water quality and flood prevention. Wes Owen, a Southwest Cape Coral resident, shared his concerns about the city's budgeting process. "I think obviously we do see a lot of flooding that goes on whenever we do get a rain. To me, that seems to be normal for Florida. My concern is more about the budget and if they're really making the best use of taxpayer dollars," Owen said. Another resident, Ron Kenney, expressed frustration with the ongoing issues. "It's just one thing after another," Kenney said. Flooding, drainage problems, and runoff-related water quality issues have been persistent challenges for Cape Coral residents. The city has seen annual stormwater fees steadily increase over the years, rising from $130 in fiscal year 2022 to a proposed $163 in fiscal year 2027—a $33 increase, or roughly 25%. The city says the additional funds will support drainage pipe maintenance, canal upkeep, and water quality projects.
