ICE operations on the Gulf Coast draw mixed reactions from residents

Increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity on the Gulf Coast has prompted a range of reactions from local residents, as operations continue in the area. Charlotte County resident Robert Lanerd voiced his support for the federal agents and their work. "They're federal agents. They have a very dangerous job. They don't know when they go up to a car if someone has a gun. The way they're treated in this country, I think, is horrible," Lanerd said. Lanerd also mentioned that ICE agents are staying at the Luminary Hotel and extended an invitation to them. "They're staying at the Luminary Hotel. And, personally, if there's any agents, I mean, I have a house with two empty bedrooms. They're more than welcome," he said. Meanwhile, Lee County resident Rob Harriman expressed alarm after seeing a significant ICE presence in his neighborhood off Little Torch Key. "We're the residents of this community, of this street. I think there should be a better announcement of that. To have a large police presence and not knowing what's going on, it's very scary," Harriman said. Harriman also questioned the tactics used by ICE during their operations. "I don't understand why their tactics are like that. I think it should be announced. I think people should be aware. I just don't like how they're handling this," he said. On Wednesday, another ICE operation was observed at the Palms of Monterrey community off Summerlin Road and Park Royal Drive. The operation involved drones and Lee County deputies. When contacted for information, the Lee County Sheriff's Office referred inquiries to the Florida Highway Patrol. An ICE public information officer on the scene described the operation as an ongoing investigation but did not provide further details. Charlotte County resident John Varrone shared his thoughts on immigration, emphasizing the importance of legal processes. "I support immigration for sure. Everyone deserves a chance to come to America, but it's got to be done legally," Varrone said. Since Monday, efforts to obtain additional information from ICE and FHP about the operations, including the number of arrests and the individuals targeted, have not been successful.
