LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - A busy intersection in Lehigh Acres is getting a major upgrade that could change your daily commute.
The Florida Department of Transportation is installing a new traffic signal at State Road 82 and Alabama Road South to ease congestion and address safety concerns at the intersection.
WINK News Traffic Anchor Mariaregina Mendoza was at the scene, where a line of vehicles could be seen waiting to connect onto State Road 82.
FDOT says drivers turning right from southbound Alabama Road and left from eastbound State Road 82 face excessive delays, especially during morning and afternoon rush hours.
One local told WINK News the traffic and crashes along this road are hard to miss.
"Oh its bumper to bumper on this road. There's been several crashes, all up and down," said Kristine Boucher.
Other drivers say they can spend more than 20 minutes waiting at this intersection.
The $1.9 million project will change how some drivers get through the area. Drivers coming from Alabama Road who want to turn left or continue straight will first turn right onto State Road 82 then make a U-turn.
Many drivers say the new signal is long overdue.
"I think it's great news. It'll help a lot with traffic and quality of life," said Josiah Perry, a local driver.
The project also includes a new pedestrian crossing across State Road 82, sidewalk upgrades, new lighting along with fresh pavement and road markings.
FDOT says drivers can expect intermittent nighttime and overnight lane closures during construction. Work is expected to be complete in early 2027.
