A 71-year-old Cape Coral man faces multiple charges after police said he crashed a rented Jeep into a tree and a mailbox before driving away and refusing to stop for officers. Glenn Anthony Arrigo was arrested Thursday on charges including driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding, resisting an officer without violence, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash and three counts of DUI causing property damage, according to a Cape Coral Police Department arrest affidavit. Police said the crash happened around 7:39 p.m. near Santa Barbara Boulevard and Southeast 40th Terrace. An officer reported seeing Arrigo make a wide turn and strike a tree in a residential yard. According to the affidavit, Arrigo backed onto Santa Barbara Boulevard and was accused of driving away after an officer activated lights and siren and ordered him to stop. Police said Arrigo later struck a mailbox while driving toward his home and was accused of continuing without stopping. Officers eventually found Arrigo in a driveway on Southeast First Avenue. Police said he was accused of refusing commands to exit the vehicle and resisting as officers pulled him out. The affidavit said Arrigo was accused of having bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, poor coordination and a strong odor of alcohol. He denied drinking alcohol but later acknowledged he had been driving the Jeep and was the only person inside. Arrigo refused to participate in field sobriety exercises and declined to provide a breath sample, police said. The initial crash caused an estimated $1,000 in landscaping damage, while the Jeep sustained about $10,000 in damage. The mailbox damage was estimated at $250, according to the affidavit.
