Blue-green algae health alert lifted for Carousel Lake-South Shore in Lee County

The Florida Department of Health in Lee County lifted the health alert for blue-green algae toxins in Carousel Lake-South Shore on Wednesday. According to FDOH, the health alert issued on July 13 has been lifted, and the public can resume water-related activities. FDOH said the public should still exercise caution as the blue-green algae bloom status can change if conditions become favorable. Visitors to Carousel Lake-South Shore were advised to avoid contact with the water if they see algae blooms. Blue-green algae are a type of bacteria that is common in Florida's freshwater environments, FDOH said. Blooms occur when the rapid growth of algae leads to discolored water and floating mats that emit unpleasant odors. Blue-green algae can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals.
