Clewiston woman celebrates 100th birthday after more than six decades in the community

CLEWISTON, Fla. (WINK)— A longtime Clewiston resident is reaching a remarkable milestone this week.

Helen M. Endicott York will celebrate her 100th birthday Friday surrounded by family, friends and a community she has called home for more than six decades. Born Sept. 4, 1926, in Enfield, Illinois, York moved to Clewiston with her family in June 1962.

That same year, she became a member of First United Methodist Church, where she remains a faithful member today. Over the years, York has made a lasting impact through her faith, career and service to the community.

She sang in the church choir for 58 years and taught Sunday School, sharing her time and talents with generations of families. York also built a decades-long career as a bookkeeper, working with Redish, Bamberg Motors and John Perry, CPA.

She also provided bookkeeping services from her home for several small businesses in the community, continuing to work well into her early 90s. Her community involvement extended beyond her church and career.

York was a member of the Garden Club and an active member of the Elks Lodge. Family has remained at the center of York's life.

She and her husband, Delmon Leon "Shorty" York, raised four daughters — Karen, Kathy, Kristy and Karol. Their family has since grown to include six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The City of Clewiston issued a proclamation honoring York on Aug. 17, recognizing her century of life and more than 60 years of contributions to the community. City officials say York's life reflects a commitment to family, faith, hard work and service.
