RSW's old control tower comes down after 32 years

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — The old control tower at Southwest Florida International Airport is being demolished on Thursday after sitting unused for nearly five years.

Since the new control tower went up in 2021, the old one has been sitting idle. The FAA went in and removed all the old equipment inside, and now it's demolition time.

Crews are using an excavator to pull apart the old control tower, and it's coming down piece by piece.

The new control tower, built in 2021, is framed between the excavator and the old tower coming down. Before that new one went up, the old control tower stood at RSW for 32 years.

WINK News is reaching out to the construction company to find out what they plan to do with the scrap metal and other leftover pieces from the old tower.
