Ex-New Jersey cop indicted on several sexual misconduct charges after 2025 arrest in Cape Coral

A former cop and firefighter from New Jersey has been formally indicted by a grand jury on nine charges, many of them sexual misconduct-related, after his 2025 arrest in Cape Coral. According to the Office of the Attorney General in New Jersey, Robert M. Sinnott Jr., 53, is the former chief of the Silverton Volunteer Fire Company in Toms River and is a retired Island Heights police officer. Sinnott was previously charged with four counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual misconduct and one count of second-degree sexual misconduct. On Tuesday, a grand jury voted to indict Sinnott on those previous charges and new ones: fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, second-degree official misconduct and second-degree pattern of official misconduct. According to court documents, an investigation by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability's Corruption Bureau revealed that Sinnott had forced multiple firefighters into acts of non-consensual sexual contact. This same pattern of behavior was alleged during Sinnott's time as a police officer. It's alleged that Sinnott created situations where he would be alone with victims at several locations, including his residence and the firehouse, and would allegedly handcuff them under the false pretense of needing their assistance with police-related training. Then, Sinnott would allegedly force sexual contact upon victims against their will. In 2025 Sinnott was arrested by the Cape Coral Police Department's SWAT team with assistance from the OPIA. Search warrants were executed on his residence, person and vehicle. Sinnott was extradited to New Jersey for prosecution.
