Fort Myers neighborhood shaken after officer-involved shooting

Residents in a Fort Myers neighborhood are seeking answers after an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning resulted in one person’s death. Amy Fletcher, who lives near Katherine Street and Jackson Street, said the area has been calm since she moved in, but that changed Saturday morning when multiple agencies, including the Fort Myers Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, blocked off a large portion of the neighborhood for an investigation. "We want answers. We don't know what happened," Fletcher said. She described the situation as unsettling. "It's scary. Scary just to know that, you know, there's a shooting like a couple of houses down," Fletcher said. The Fort Myers Police Department confirmed it responded to a call around 5:48 a.m. Saturday, which led to an officer-involved shooting. One person was taken to the hospital and later died from their injuries. Jason Howard, another resident, said he has concerns about how the situation unfolded. "I do feel safe in the neighborhood, but I question the authorities in situations like this. And overstepping their boundaries as far as being law enforcement and trying to keep things on alert," Howard said. Authorities have not released further details about the incident.
