Family gathers for vigil honoring 4-year-old boy who died in Lehigh Acres

Family and friends gathered at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres to honor the life of 4-year-old Marquis Edwards Jr., who died unexpectedly on August 27. Under the pavilion, Marquis’ favorite toys and pictures were displayed as his loved ones came together to pay tribute. The vigil included the release of balloons, songs, and prayers in his memory. Edwards' cause of death still remains unclear. Lee County Deputies said they received a call just before 7 p.m. last Thursday and arrived at a home in Lehigh Acres to find Marquis unresponsive in the driveway. He was assisted by Lehigh Acres firefighters and EMS before being transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead 45 minutes later. Marquis’ family said he did not have any other medical conditions aside from nonverbal autism. Devon Crawford, Marquis’ uncle, was one of many who gathered to grieve at the vigil. “Hate seeing my sister like this, like it is hard," Crawford said. "I wonder if it was my daughter, you know." “It's shambles right now. Straight shambles," Crawford said. "I just miss him so much. It's just like I feel him here right now because every time we used to come to the park." The family is still seeking closure as authorities continue to investigate the cause of Marquis’ death.
