At least five dead after Amazon cargo plane overruns Miami International runway

MIAMI, Fla. (WINK)— Miami International Airport said Prime Air Flight 7598 overran the airport’s diagonal runway around 2 p.m. Sunday, killing at least five people after the plane smashed into cars, authorities say. 

 The aircraft was identified by the FAA as a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane that departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

After overrunning the runway, the plane ended up disabled at the northwest end of the airport.

Following the incident, all runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport were closed and a full ground stop was put in place.

The airport later reopened two of its four runways, but the crash continued to affect operations.

Passengers were advised to check directly with their airline for flight status before going to the airport.

The FAA said it will investigate the incident.

Additional reported impacts included stranded or rerouted passengers at Southwest Florida International Airport, including one canceled flight and another flight from Cancun to Miami diverted there, with passengers reportedly waiting on the runway for hours before deplaning.
