Charlotte County approves Buc-ee's site plan near Peace River despite residents' environmental fears

Charlotte County commissioners unanimously approved the final site plan for a Buc-ee's travel center on Harborview Road, despite concerns raised by residents during a land use meeting. The approved plan allows developers to use over 28 acres of land off Interstate 75 for a massive gas station featuring 120 gas pumps and a 74,000-square-foot travel center. During the meeting, residents voiced differing opinions on the project. Tim Price, one of the attendees, expressed his opposition, shouting, "We cannot accept this environmental disaster." Most neighbors who spoke at the meeting urged commissioners not to approve the plan, citing environmental concerns. However, one resident voiced support for the project, saying, "We need a Buc-ee's." Edward Blare, a Port Charlotte resident who lives near the proposed site, shared his concerns about potential noise, diesel fuel smells, and environmental risks. "Any noise that could come from it and any of the diesel fuel smell, I believe they said that they're gonna have 120 parking spots for trucks," Blare said. Blare also expressed worries about the possibility of fuel leaks affecting the nearby Peace River. "We've never had a problem with leaks, but it only takes one, and it's going to go right into the Peace River, and you know, it'll make a mess. It'll take them years to clean it up. So it's probably not the best place for it in my opinion. Yeah. You know, not just a not-in-my-backyard thing," Blare said. "It's just you're right on the water." Developers have not yet provided details on the next steps or a timeline for the Buc-ee's project.
