CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — The Cape Coral Police Department said a man is dead after CCPD shot him Tuesday after they say he pointed a gun at officers following a disturbance at a home.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, the situation started around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, when someone called 911 to report a man armed with a gun and a knife kicking in the front door of a home in the 1400 block of NE 10th Terrace.
A resident inside the home also called 911 to report the same thing, saying a family member had kicked in the door.
The man, identified as 43-year-old Daniel Eric Colon, was then seen leaving the scene on foot toward NE 15th Place with a gun in his hand.
Officers set up a perimeter while Cape Coral police and Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies searched the area near NE 15th Place and NE 9th Terrace, focusing on a dumpster area behind the City Mattress at 915 NE 15th Place.
Authorities are responding to an active scene near City Mattress at Del Prado Boulevard North and Northeast 10th Street.
During the search, Colon came out of nearby bushes pointing a black handgun directly at officers and deputies, according to the department.
Two Cape Coral officers fired their weapons, hitting Colon.
Officers immediately detained Colon and gave him emergency medical care on the scene until Lee County EMS arrived, then transported him to Gulf Coast Hospital, where he went into surgery.
No officers or deputies were hurt. The department placed the two officers involved on administrative leave, which it says is standard procedure in situations like this.
Officers said they found the suspect hiding beside a dumpster behind City Mattress. He emerged from a bush next to the dumpster, allegedly pulled a gun and pointed it at law enforcement.
Two Cape Coral police officers fired their weapons and struck the suspect, Daniel Eric Colone. Officers detained him and provided medical aid before he was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center were he later died.
