Daniel Eric Colon, the man shot by Cape Coral police Wednesday near the City Mattress off Del Prado Boulevard North after being accused of pointing a gun at law enforcement, has died in the hospital, according to the Cape Coral Police Department. Adreanna Colon, the woman who says that she is the daughter of Daniel, says that her father died in the hospital after he was shot. "Losing my father is something I never imagined having to go through, and trying to process everything that has happened surrounding his death has been incredibly difficult," Adreanna said in a statement to Gulf Coast News. "There are a lot of emotions, questions, and pain that we are still trying to process." Daniel Eric Colon was injured after police responded to a home on Northeast 10th Street on Wednesday in reference to a disturbance. The caller reportedly said that a man had a knife and handgun and kicked the door down. The man was reportedly an unwelcome family member and left the home, according to officers. In a news conference, Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said that officers found Colon hiding behind a dumpster at City Mattress. Sizemore said that Colon came out of hiding, pointed a gun at law enforcement, and was shot by officers. During the conference, which took place Wednesday night, Sizemore said that Colon was in surgery. No officers were injured at the time of the incident, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, as is department policy.
