WINK Listens heads to Elks Lodge in Estero

ESTERO, Fla. (WINK) — The Bonita Springs Estero Elks Lodge #2753 has a history of charity and giving back to the community that dates back to the 1800s.

Peter Thompson has been a member at this lodge for decades.

"The real name of the Elks is the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, BPOE," Thompson said. "I colloquially refer to them as the best people on earth."

Thompson said the members are like family. While the Elks' members have a lot of fun together, they're also doing important work. They raise money for national and local charities.

Dr. Linda Cunning, the CEO of New Horizons of Southwest Florida, said the organization has benefited from the Elks' generosity for several years. Donations from the Elks have helped the nonprofit provide tutoring and mentoring services for 400 students in Lee and Collier counties..

"After school programs really do help lift the load off of our schools," Cunning said. "We're here to support schools and our teachers."

The Elks also help feed 400 people each week by supporting the Cafe of Life. Yadi Munoz, volunteer coordinator at Cafe of Life, praised the partnership.

"The Elks has just been amazing because they are great sponsors to our organization," Munoz said.

Thompson reflected on his pride in being part of the organization.

"I'm certainly proud to be an elk, just because of what we do for everybody," Thompson said.
