Port Charlotte neighbors seek answers after death investigation on Rockwood Street

Detectives are investigating a death at a home on Rockwood Street in Port Charlotte, leaving neighbors concerned and searching for answers about what happened to a couple cherished by the community. “They're really nice people. They were like grandparents to us,” said Sophia Barta, a neighbor. Sophia and her sister, Shoshanna, shared their worries about the situation involving their neighbors. “We would always see them when we would walk to school, and they would walk with their dogs. All the neighbors loved them. Such nice people,” Shoshanna said. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they responded to a mental health-related call at the home on Thursday afternoon. Authorities stated that everyone is accounted for and that there are no suspects at this time. “You know, the road was taped off until this morning. And things seem to be quieting down a little bit,” said neighbor Lyn Castellano. “I just wish I had some answers,” said another neighbor, Gay Horton. When asked how many people died, the sheriff’s office declined to provide further information. Neighbors reflected on the couple’s welcoming presence in the community, noting the now-empty chairs in their driveway. “They sat out in their front driveway and mingled with the other neighbors,” Castellano said. “Well, their chairs are special because they'd come out at night and sit, and then the whole neighborhood would go over there and sit with them,” Horton said. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details.
