Roar Offshore speedboat races return to Fort Myers Beach for first time since Hurricane Ian

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (WINK) — For the first time in five years, Roar Offshore returns to Fort Myers Beach on Friday.

The speedboat race event has been on hold ever since Hurricane Ian barreled through Southwest Florida four years ago. The hurricane destroyed the infrastructure the race needed.

Town leaders said visitors heading to the event this weekend will need a little patience. Once drivers cross the bridge onto the island, parking may be tight as thousands of people are expected to attend the races.

Some parking lots are already closed for restoration work from Hurricane Ian. Additionally, Roar Offshore will take up 22 spaces in a lot near Margaritaville for race teams.

Fort Myers Beach Mayor Dan Allers says planning ahead is key.

"Whatever you can do to help alleviate, because there are some parking lots that are going under renovation. Lin Hall Park is being renovated. One of our parking lots is gonna be used for the event. So parking may be a challenge," Allers said.

The town is encouraging people to carpool, bike or take Lee Transportation to the beach.

Roar Offshore runs through Sunday, with the championship race set for Sunday afternoon.
