CDC reports increase in rabies-related inquiries across the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a rise in rabies exposures across the United States. According to the CDC, there was a 17% increase in rabies-related inquiries during July and August compared to the same period last year. Additionally, at least eight state health departments have reported increases in post-exposure treatment or errors in administering it. In a statement released on Thursday, the CDC said that proper administration of the rabies vaccine and human rabies immune globulin is critical to ensuring that patients receive effective protection. Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms begin, but post-exposure treatment is nearly 100% effective when administered in time. It's recommended that anyone who has been bitten, scratched or otherwise exposed to a potentially rabid animal immediately contact a healthcare provider or public health department for guidance.
