Fort Myers mayor addresses police chief voiding school zone ticket

Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson has responded to the controversy surrounding Police Chief Jason Fields' voiding a school zone speeding ticket issued to city employee Carloncia Lee on the first day of school. Officer Obstein, who issued the ticket, explained his reasoning during the stop. "It's just zero tolerance. I have zero tolerance for it, sir," Obstein said. "I have no exceptions today on the first day of school, going 12 miles an hour over in a school zone, sir." After speaking with Chief Fields, Officer Obstein relented, saying, "I'm going to void the ticket that I originally wrote. Because after speaking with the chief of police, I was asked to give you a professional courtesy." Chief Fields later expressed regret over his involvement in the matter. "I recognize I should not have become involved," Fields said in a statement, adding that he understands why the incident has caused concern. Mayor Anderson addressed the situation, stating, "While this incident should have been handled differently, I do not believe it rises to the level of corruption or termination." He also said he has complete confidence that the city manager will address the issue appropriately. City Manager Marty Lawing confirmed an investigation into all parties involved. "Just let me tell you that we'll be doing an investigation. It will be handled professionally and equitably. That's all I have to say at this point," Lawing said. When asked who would conduct the investigation, Lawing added, "There will be several parties involved." Chief Fields has not made himself available for an interview, and Police Union President Yari Sanders has not returned calls for comment.
