A 14-month sidewalk and drainage improvement project along Hancock Bridge Parkway in Cape Coral is underway, with residents expressing both anticipation and concerns about the construction process. “I already look down there like I'd hate to be these people. How do they get out of their homes, you know, and stuff? All you're going to do is go through mud and stuff, especially with all the rain we've had,” Brad Bosley said. The project, approved by Lee County commissioners in June, will span from US-41 in North Fort Myers to Del Prado Boulevard. Residents like Joe Andreu are hoping to avoid the disruptions their neighbors are currently experiencing. “I would imagine that the driveway up there where the cracks are and by the street will be replaced, so that's nice, but I don't know what they're going to do with my grass. I see the other homes down the street there. You're going in about 18 ft or 20 ft. They should be replacing anything that they damage,” Andreu said. Safety concerns about dips and trip hazards on the current sidewalks have also been raised, but the improvements are expected to address these issues. “I think it'd be good that they're level because I have two totaled knees and I've gone walking before. And you can feel when it leans one, you know, all of a sudden quite a bit lower than the other. So I'd like it to be level, but I wonder how much it's going to be torn up to get it level,” Bosley said. The $2.9 million project is also designed to improve drainage in the area, but Bosley expressed concerns about how construction during the rainy season might impact the neighborhood. “I look down further west, and you can see how they really tore it all up, because they have to put in drainage. So I'm worried about how will it affect our drainage,” Bosley said. The county has stated that plans are in place to ensure residents can access their driveways during the construction process. The project is expected to take 14 months to complete.
